The relationship between a business and its web designer is not one to be overlooked. A happy, professional interaction can lead to a fruitful transaction, while a distant or uninvolved relationship will most certainly hinder the potential of your website or web application.
Obviously, we can say be nice. Still, there is so much more. If you would like to get the absolute most out of your website - and there's no reason you shouldn't - you should absolutely heed these notes.
You are the "Patient"
If an oncologist diagnosed you with cancer and prescribed you a treatment, would you question them? Maybe - but you would at least have to acknowledge his extensive background in experience with and treatment of cancer. He probably studied it extensively in school. Perhaps he happens to have a number of successful cancer survivors as patients.
The doctor-patient relationship is a great parallel and reference to the client-web designer relationship. You, of course, have the final say on what happens to your body and with your treatment, and if you have a good doctor, he will listen to what you have to say. However, how often do you take the stethoscope out of his hands?
We want you to trust us as the experts; as consultants. You probably have some amazing ideas, and we are all ears, but the one thing we know better than anything is web design. Let us recommend to you the best way to cure your cold - to increase your traffic, to appeal to your visitors, and to be a web-leader in your industry.
Be Open
The hardest thing to admit is that we are ALL wrong at some point. We would love for our clients to be open during the design process. The worst thing a client can do is to walk into an initial meeting with everything figured out. There are aspects of the web design realm that simply don't comply with what we may think would be the most appealing. Though we rarely are in a situation where we can't "find a way", design and code standards may not allow for some things to happen.
Our promise to you is that we will find the absolute best alternative.
Be Honest and Fear Not
Above all - the most vital virtue in the client - web designer relationship is honesty. If you don't like something, speaking up can result in a quick solution. Not letting us know can result in a semi-permanent website or application that you're not fully happy with (now what kind of an investment is that). Nothing makes us happier than to know that we have developed something that truly pleases you. Constructive criticism is what pushes everyone to strive for the best.
What do we mean by Fear Not? You won't hurt our feelings, so be as brutally honest as you wish you could be. If you don't like how something is coming along, let us know what you visualize.
Take Advantage of Us
If you have a support contract, use it! You should be benefiting from every last second of support you pay for. There will more than likely be something that can be improved. Ask us to look into it for you.
